Students partner with 3M to design a better taillight

A Michigan Technological University student can now say he's worked on the taillights being produced for several 2013 models of car.

Brett Spigarelli is a doctoral student in chemical engineering at Tech, and advisor to the Consumer Product Manufacturing Enterprise, which connects industry companies to educators, researchers and students working in their fields. In his previous studies Spigarelli worked on a project with global manufacturer 3M to test a new material used in the redesign of several taillights for auto manufacturers.

That material was used to create 3M's uniform lighting lens product, which now, four years later, is on the market and being used on several car models, with more planned in the future.

"What impresses me most about CPM and the Enterprise experience are the opportunities for students to work directly with engineers and managers in industry," says Tony Rogers, faculty advisor to the program. "Having experience with how things are done in the corporate world is invaluable to our students as they seek employment."

About 25 students collaborated with 3M on the taillight project.
