Michigan Technological University in Houghton is the recipient of a national award for diversity in higher education.
The Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award comes from the magazine
INSIGHT into Diversity, which announced Tech was among 48 award winners for 2012 earlier this month. They all will be featured in the magazine's December issue.
The magazine selected Michigan Tech based on the university's "exemplary diversity and inclusion initiatives relating to gender, race, ethnicity, veterans, people with disabilities and members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community."
The award particularly noted the school's minor in diversity studies, its training for supervisors, its cultural training for student affairs staff, summer programs which focused on including underrepresented groups in the sciences, and its recruitment, retention and promotion efforts toward women in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.
"We are excited and honored that INSIGHT into Diversity is recognizing Michigan Tech's institution-wide diversity efforts," says Chris Anderson, special assistant to the president for institutional diversity. "Our comprehensive programs demonstrate that the University community is committed to building a teaching and research environment that reflects the diversity of the world we live in and values the contribution of each unique individual by continuing to ensure an inclusive campus climate for students, faculty and staff."
Three other Michigan universities were honored; Michigan State University, Ferris State University and Delta College.
