New family medicine grads plan to stay in U.P.

The Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program has graduated a new class, and several of the latest physicians are staying right here in the U.P to work.

The program consists of three years of residency training at Marquette General Health System.

"While we are sorry to bid farewell to these fantastic individuals, we are pleased that they will be moving on to start their own practices and will be able to utilize their outstanding skills with patients, some right here in the Upper Peninsula," says Dr. Stuart Johnson, Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program Director.

Two graduates are headed to Escanaba to join the OSF Hospital and Medical Group: Tony Kamerschen, who earned an M.D. from Wayne State University, and Jordan Povich, a graduate of the Michigan State College of Osteopathic Medicine. Kamarschen's wife, Sara, is a native of Escanaba, while Povich grew up in North Dakota and the Upper Peninsula.

L'Anse also will welcome a new doctor, as Mark Cecilio, a Los Angeles native, will join the emergency department of Baraga County Memorial Hospital. Cecilio received his medical degree from Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary.

The other residency graduates will head to Ashland, Wisconsin; downstate Marshall, Michigan; and Lewisburg, Tennessee, joining family and colleagues.

The Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program also is welcoming a new incoming class of six residents hailing from as far away as Sri Lanka and as close as Michigan.
