Manistique art student's work to be shown in DC Capitol building

A Manistique High School student's artwork will soon be shown in the U.S. Capitol Complex, as the 2011 winner of the Congressional Art Competition for the First Congressional District of Michigan.

U.S. Congressman Dan Benishek, who represents the First Congressional District, announced that Kirsten Brown, a senior from Manistique, won the juried competition.

The artwork displayed is titled Youth and is an ink drawing of two young people.

"We are honored to have Kirsten's work of art represent Northern Michigan in Congressional Art Competition. I know visitors to the Capitol will enjoy seeing her work among the many other exceptional pieces from around the country. Kirsten is clearly a gifted young artist with a very bright future ahead of her," says Benishek.

The winners of the competition, one from each congressional district, will have their artwork displayed in an exhibition in the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., which opens in June, and will be displayed all year.

"Based on the quality artwork submitted from around the District, I know our panel of judges had a difficult task in picking the winner," says Benishek, who is from Iron Mountain.

The art competition is sponsored by The Congresional Institute and is judged by a panel of three Washington, D.C. art professionals.
