LSSU to hold second Laker Gold Scholarship competition

College scholarships mostly go to seniors and juniors who need it more, right? Not with the new Laker Gold Scholarship Competition at Lake Superior State University. It's open to incoming LSSU freshmen who have distinguished themselves in academics.

The competition is Jan. 28, at LSSU in Sault Ste. Marie, and includes an essay challenge, personal interview, parents' program, campus tour, dinner and evening hockey game. It's open to students who have applied to LSSU by Dec. 1 and who have a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher and an ACT score of 28 or higher.

"We are excited to be able to continue this scholarship competition for our academically talented students to LSSU," says Susan Camp, director of LSSU Admissions. "This is a great way to reward those students who strive to achieve excellent academic performance. Last spring, 50 students participated in the competition and 28 of them attended LSSU this fall."

Most students who meet the qualifications already qualify for automatic merit scholarships, but the competition scholarships are in addition to those. The top three students will be awarded Laker Gold Scholarships, which include full tuition, renewable for four years. Award notifications will come in March.
