JC Penney offers $6,500 grants to help start FIRST Robotics teams

In this economic climate, it's difficult for schools to add programs for their students to be a part of.

JC Penney wants to help.

The retailer is offering a $6,500 grant from each of its stores to schools that are interested in starting a FIRST Robotics team. The grant would cover the registration fee in two events plus the kit of components used to build the robot.

The only caveat is that a school looking to receive the grant must be within a 20-mile radius of the JC Penney Store involved.

"This is a huge opportunity to grow FIRST throughout our state and give students everywhere an opportunity at more than $12 million in FIRST college scholarships," says Gail Alpert of FIRST Robotics. "For schools that have hesitated to participate in the past, this is the perfect time to jump in and have an outstanding STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program at their school for free. "

Teams must apply for the grant by emailing Alpert by Oct. 15. Schools do not have to have their entire team assembled yet, just the commitment to form one and a team leader in place.

Michigan has the second largest number of teams in the country, behind California.

JC Penney has 43 stores in Michigan. Upper Peninsula stores are located in Houghton, Marquette, Escanaba, Kingsford and Sault Ste. Marie.
