A Northern Michigan University alumnus has written his second book, inspired by his own life and stories he's collected along the way.
Raise the Flag is a collection of six stories drawn from the life of the author,
James More, although he says they're not strictly autobiographical, but have elements of fiction.
"Raise the Flag is a book about my journey for education and a progression of my writing in a literary six-pack of stories," says More.
The stories include Summer of Eighty Eight, about his time at NMU, and Uncle Sam and the IRS Man, an exploration of government and rights. Taken together, they represent a journey in search of identity, career and purpose, he says.
More, an Illinois native, earned an English degree from NMU in 1992, and previously wrote a chapter book for children, Home of the Mountain Goats. He also has written stories and poems, and plans to tackle a memoir in greater length.
The inspirations for the stories start with More's World War II-veteran grade school principal, who taught the values of education and patriotism; they also include More's parents and family, professors and other mentors.
A preview of Raise the Flag is available at the author's website,
www.jamesmorebooks.com, where the book is available for purchase. It also can be found at the NMU bookstore and other local book sellers.
