Hougton's GS Engineering named Government Contractor of the Year for 2010

When GS Engineering was recognized five years ago by Michigan Celebrates Small Business as one of Michigan's 50 Companies to Watch, they must have been able to see into the future.

The company, which is based in Houghton, recently earned another award -- the Government Contractor of the Year for 2010.

"We knew we were doing good work for the government and prime contractors," says Glen Simula, president of GS Engineering. "This confirms our believe, giving us a stamp of approval."

Simula is no stranger to government contracts, which he has been working with since beginning his partnership with the United States military in 2002.

That contract led to a full bloom of projects for the federal government.

"Last fall we received our largest government contract yet, a five-year contract for engineering services," says Simula. "Small contracts are six months for the government. Normal contracts are around two years. And ours is for five."

GS Engineering has been on a roll since the beginning. In 2001, the company set out to realize its goal of solving commercial and military engineering problems. Since then, the company has grown from three employees to 60 full-time workers, a research facility and a 420-acre customizable test course. Some of GS Engineering's clients have included the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, leading vehicle manufacturers and material development companies.
