Finlandia University hires new enrollment officer

A Michigan Technological University graduate has been hired at Finlandia University in Hancock as an admissions officer.

Sara Switzer will be Finlandia's new administration counselor, in charge of recruiting students in the western Upper Peninsula, Minnesota and other areas as well.

Switzer has plenty of background in the U.P., as she was born in Chassell and has lived in Marquette and Houghton previously. Her most recent position was as a real estate appraiser in Marquette, which she had done for the last eight years.

"Since I started January 24, I've been learning everything I can about Finlandia," Switzer says. "I am looking forward to working at Finlandia and living in the Copper Country."

Switzer graduated from Marquette Senior High School, and earned a bachelor's degree in scientific and technical communication from Michigan Technological University in Houghton. Her parents are Hank and Sue Switzer of Marquette.

Finlandia, the only private college in the U.P., was founded in 1896 by Finns, and is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It has a small, about 500-member student body, and offers bachelor's degrees in art and design, business administration, elementary education, liberal studies, nursing, and human services, as well as associate's degrees in general studies, criminal justice, and physical therapy assistance.
