Michigan women have an opportunity unlike any other in the state
Department of Natural Resources' Becoming an Outdoors Woman program. It introduces basic outdoors skills, or even some advanced skills, in a fun, social, camp environment in the U.P.
And what better time to enjoy all that the U.P. landscape has to offer than in the winter? After all, if you can't have fun outside in the winter here, it's going to be a long, boring wait until spring. So, the DNR is offering its upcoming BOW program in Big Bay, from February 24 to 26.
Indoor and outdoor activities and classes are on the schedule, like cross-country skiing, dog sledding, ice fishing, fly tying, wilderness first aid, woodburning, and many others. Instructors work with each participant's abilities and skills, tailoring instruction to both basic and advanced learners.
The camp location is
Bay Cliff Health Camp, about half an hour outside of Marquette. Registration costs $180 for the weekend, which includes food and lodging in a dormitory-style facility. Participants must be 18 or older and bring suitable winter clothing and gear. Registration and payment is available
online. Other outdoors programs also are offered through BOW across the state at other times of the year.
