Tahquamenon Falls park offers maple sugaring demos

It's that time again in the northwoods--the sap is running in the maple trees, and that means it's time for maple syruping. Sometimes called maple sugaring, the arboreal art will be explored the weekend of March 25 and 26 at the Tahquamenon Falls State Park in Paradise in the eastern Upper Peninsula.

"Maple Sugaring Days" will take place at the park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

The weekend includes demonstration stations set up along the park's nature trail, to show visitors the process of converting maple sap into sweet syrup. Both historical and modern methods of syruping will be covered, and all ages are welcome.

"Maple sugaring is a great outdoor activity for families to enjoy in March, when the temperatures start to rise and the sap starts flowing," says Tahquamenon Falls park interpreter Theresa Neal. "Visitors in the past have been amazed to learn that the trees in your own back yard can produce this seasonal treat."

Local school groups will come tour the park sugaring operation on Friday, and both days also are open to the general public. Hands-on activities and maple syrup experts will also be part of the weekend.
