A new course of study is being offered to
Northern Michigan University students this fall; a minor in dance.
Part of the health, physical education and recreation department, the dance minor is a 20-credit program exploring various dance styles, both in theory and performance.
"The minor is a natural fit in our department, where there is a strong emphasis on health, human performance and lifetime fitness," says Mary Jane Tremethick, department head. "Though the minor is open to majors across campus, it is particularly complementary to majors in theatre, community health education, management of health and fitness, music and outdoor recreation and leadership. Students may choose dance to further a secondary interest or may use the minor to open employment opportunities in various recreation programs or dance for theater."
NMU has offered dance classes for many years, including folk, tap, jazz, ballet, belly dancing, hip hop, modern, theatre and social dance, but this is the first time a program has been created with an academic credential available to students.
