We just realized that we're writing a lot about beer this week, or bars, or mead. Well, when we look at it that way it is clear that we're ready for our week to be over soon (our Tuesday is most folk's Friday). Hopefully beer or mead is in our near future.
And, hopefully, it comes from here in the Upper Peninsula.
Why? Mostly because we love the U.P., but also because the brews made here are darn good. That's why there is going to be a first-ever U.P. Craft Beer Week next month, running from Sept. 3-8 and ending with the Michigan's Brewers Guild's annual U.P. Fall Beer Festival in Marquette.
The U.P. Craft Beer Week is being organized by A Pint Above, LLC, which was founded by White's Party Store owner Jamie Strand and Josh Marenger of Bay de Noc Brewers--the U.P.'s own homebrew club.
"We looked at some of the great craft beer weeks happening downstate and around the country, and thought that we could easily do something like that in the U.P.," says Marenger. "There is a lot of great craft beer to be had up here, including four new breweries that have opened within the last two years.
Details on the events are still being ironed out, but you can get an idea of what is to come by visiting the
U.P. Craft Beer Week website. Events will take place all over the U.P. and include such places as Ore Dock Brewing, Soo Brewing and many, many more.
And if you see a donation button on the homepage, it's because event venues are not being charged to host events or for promotion of their events. Donations are being accepted to help defray some of the costs.
"While researching some other craft beer weeks around the country, we found some of them were charging up to a couple hundred dollars for each venue to participate in the event," says Strand. "Because this is a new event for all of us, and we didn't want to exclude venues that fit the bill, we decided not to go that route."
