Portage Health partners with local schools to raise cancer funds

Real athletes aren't afraid to throw on some pink and support a good cause--just ask the boys and girls basketball teams as Lake Linden and Dollar Bay high schools.

The four teams joined forces with Portage Health to help "pink out" a couple of high school basketball games in an effort to raise awareness and funds for those battling cancer.

The first game of the effort was played last week when the boys squared off. The second will be played Feb. 16 in Lake Linden when the girls play in the Copper Country Conference showdown.

"The student athletes understand the purpose of such fundraisers, and it’s exciting for them," says Jan Quarless, superintendent at Dollar Bay/Tamarack City Area Schools. "All of them get enjoy this event, and like supporting a great cause."

Portage Health is providing custom-printed pink t-shirts to all participants, who will wear the shirts for warm ups. The shirts have numbers and names of all participants and will be entered into a silent auction, with all of the proceeds assisting those who are battling cancer in our community.

This is the second year Portage Health has teamed up with the two schools, which are situated just a few miles away from each other along Torch Lake.
