The health care system Aspirus will be building a new clinic in Houghton. The main hospital in the Copper Country,
Aspirus Keweenaw, already is owned by the Wisconsin-based company.
The new clinic will be 18,000 square feet and offer multiple services in one location. Family medicine, pediatrics, oncology, orthopedics, women's health, outpatient therapies, pharmacy, lab and diagnostic services all will be in one place. It also will have 19 patient examination rooms for primary and specialty care.
"While our current Medical Arts clinic has served the community for a number of years, it became apparent that we needed to expand our facility with the addition of services and physicians to our Houghton health care team," says Aspirus Keweenaw Chief Operating Officer Mike Hauswirth. "The new construction design gives us the ability to work around the changing needs of the community. We are consolidating our clinic and therapy services plus adding space to support the most-needed specialty services."
That includes women's health, which will have expanded space and convenient access to related services. The clinic's design focuses on convenience for both doctors and patients, with easy-access parking, a front drive-through canopy, rehabilitation and outpatient therapies located near the front, and central registration at the main entrance.
Construction is slated to start this month, with the new building opening in June of 2014. The total cost is projected to be $5.4 million for the clinic, being built near Walmart and Country Inn and Suites in Houghton. The general contractor is Miron Construction Co., Inc. and the architect is Plunkett Raysich Architects.
