Two Upper Peninsula farm-related businesses are getting funds to develop local food systems and products, thanks to the
Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The grants come under a competitive process called the Value Added and Regional Food System Grant Program. Twelve projects across the state were awarded funding, out of 53 which applied.
The Growing U.P. Agriculture Association, located in Chatham, received $27,347 to develop a teaching farm that can help create community food systems in the U.P.
Love Meats of Rudyard got $75,000 to pursue USDA certification, which will open up doors to connect with local farms, institutions and U.P.-wide food systems.
The other projects are located in Lansing, Hart, Dexter, Albion, Flint, Dewitt, Charlotte, East Lansing, Petoskey, Benton Harbor and Detroit.
