For a lot of people in Marquette County, New York City is a far away thought. Some parts we can live without (a.k.a. the traffic) but some parts we missed, such as the food.
Opened originally by the late Don Curto in 1980 on Third Street, the New York Deli became known for fresh ingredients and food made just for you.
After a brief closing in 2008 and move to the current location at Washington and 7th streets, the New York Deli was reopened by a local chef. The menu was re-created, but kept the traditional favorites such as the matzo ball soup.
The current menu offers a variety of fresh-made cold and hot sandwiches, burgers, soups, salads, and a few desserts.
I came in for lunch on a snowy Tuesday afternoon looking for something delicious to eat while I waited for my next class. The entire menu looked appetizing, I just could not choose! It took me awhile to make up my mind, so if you want to pick something out before you go (or order delivery for a group) here is a copy of the
menu.
I finally made up my mind to go with the Russian Snowshoe hot sandwich (which is turkey, Swiss cheese, coleslaw, and Russian dressing all on rye bread) with the tomato basil cream soup. They have an awesome ½ sandwich, ½ soup deal for $8.50. And by ½, I mean plenty. It felt like a whole sandwich and whole bowl of soup--can’t beat that!
The sandwich was delicious, but the soup was something else. I hate tomatoes. Really hate them. My brother used to have to pay me to eat them. But for some strange reason on that day, I felt like tomato cream soup. And now I want more, every day! That’s how good it was.
And so fast! I barely had to wait to start eating. Perfect for that quick bite when you only have half an hour between appointments.
The restaurant is a cozy little place to eat that bowl of soup and catch up with a friend, which is what everyone there was doing while I was there. And now I can’t wait to take a friend there and try a new sandwich.
