Unless you worked at or attended Northern Michigan University, you probably weren't aware there was a sushi joint in Marquette.
Temaki & Tea has been open on NMU's campus since 2007, though it was cleverly hidden away in the Hedgcock Building. Now, however, it has found a more visible home along with a new
Smoothie King. Both businesses are at the old Hardee's location on Presque Isle Avenue.
Temaki & Tea is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Smoothie King's hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and opens at 9 a.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday. It closes at 9 p.m. both days.
"We have updated the Temaki & Tea menu to now include six new specialty rolls made with scallops, teriyaki salmon and softshell crab," says Stephanie Raboin, the marketing manager for NMU dining. "My personal favorite is the Lemon Wasabi Scallop Roll which includes a lemon wasabi scallop salad, asparagus, cucumber, and roasted red peppers finished with salmon salad, green onion, lemon zest, spicy mayo and wasabi sesame seeds.
"Smoothie King smoothies comes in many flavors that all revolve around seven functions: stay healthy, trim down, get energy, build up, snack right, indulge and kids' kups. There are thirty-eight smoothies that are under 300 calories. Every customer can find their own function and flavor to call their favorite."
Those who used to frequent the former burger joint at that location won't recognize the interior anymore. It has been transformed to include two separate seating areas. The front of the facility is equipped with a see-through stone fireplace that separates traditional tables and chairs from lounge seating. Nearby is a chabudai, or a low, circular table popular with many Japanese restaurants.
