The Tailings Disc Golf Course opens in former mining area in Iron River with 18 holes

The Upper Peninsula is lucky to be the home to three award-winning golf courses and a laundry list of others. Now there's a new show in town, except this time you don't have to bring your putter, pitching wedge or even a driver. Heck, leave the whole bag of clubs at home.

The Tailings Disc Golf Course recently opened in Iron River and features 18 holes and is considered difficult by disc golf standards thanks to hilly and woodsy terrain. It is free to the public.

"We've had great response from people that know the sport from out of the area," says Julie Melchior, of the Chamber of Commerce in Iron County. "It's a learning opportunity for our community because not many people know what disc golf is, and so we'll go through an education process in our process of getting this project done."

The grand opening of The Tailings was held last week with a tournament, refreshments and prizes.

The name of the course was selected because the course is located on what had previously been the side of three different iron mines. Additionally, a rail road that moved ore out of the Iron County area was also located through the area before being reclaimed and, eventually, turned into usable property.

The course is nearly two miles in length and runs along the Iron River. It was developed by the Chamber of Commerce in hoping the course helps bring people to the area.
