Superior Coffee Roasting opens in Sault

Coffee fans in the eastern U.P., rejoice: There's a new coffee roaster in Sault Ste. Marie with all kinds of locally roasted specialty coffees to try.

Superior Coffee Roasting Company is also the latest member of the Sault Area Chamber of Commerce, and owner Ron Kurnik says he is focusing on providing a variety of high-quality coffees from around the world that are roasted here in the U.P.

Individual customers can visit Superior Coffee Roasting at 2611 Ashmun Street, next to Safelite Auto Glass. Kurnik also distributes the coffee, so it's available for local businesses and restaurants to purchase as well.

To celebrate, Superior Coffee Roasting is hosting a grand opening and ribbon cutting on Nov. 29 beginning at noon. Coffee samples and refreshments are planned, as well as a demonstration of the roasting process.

Kurnik likes to say fresh coffee is like fresh baked bread: you can always get a loaf of bread at the store, but it's never as good as when it comes right out of the oven.

He's been certified in coffee roasting at the Willem Boot Coffee Consulting and Training Institute in Mill Valley, California, but his love for home-roasted coffee began, well, at home, where his mother would roast coffee beans herself.

"It's kind of a family tradition that's been passed on to me I suppose," Kurnik says. "And I'm thrilled to be able to take it to the next level here in Sault Ste. Marie."
