What's happening: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says that the upgrades at the Soo Locks are on schedule, a tough task given the size of the project. The three-phase project will install a new lock between Lake Superior and Lake Huron, strengthening shipping lanes in the Upper Peninsula. It is expected to be completed by 2030.
Who is involved in the construction: Two different firms are part of the construction with Ohio-based Kokosing and Alberici of Saint Louis handling the upstream approach walls in Phase 2. Traylor Construction of Evansville, Ind., will join the other two companies when building the new lock as part of Phase 3.
What they're saying: “Since resuming major construction this season, the Phase 2 contractor has placed 13 concrete caps, bringing the total caps placed to 68 and preparation for placement of new steel sheets, steel posts, and concrete panel wall are in progress,” said Mollie Mahoney, New Lock senior project manager. “The Phase 3 contractor plans to focus on demolition of aging structures, extensive electrical work, bridge construction, and coffer dam construction to allow for dewatering.”
What's next: Further work continues in Phase 2, which will stabilize approach walls for more modern ships to wait and pass into the lock. Some closures will be needed to complete the projects.
“Beginning May 30, the Hydro Plant tailrace will be closed to recreational boaters. The normal schedule for the tailrace is: closed Mondays at 6 a.m. through Saturdays at 6 p.m. and open Saturdays at 6 p.m. through Mondays at 6 a.m.,” New Lock Chief Mick Awbrey said. “The closure is necessary to ensure the safety of all boaters and marine construction workers as large barges, cranes and construction boats will be working in the area.”
