Pioneer to develop new plant, distribution center in Ireland in 2011

We like to think of Pioneer Surgical Technology, Inc. of Marquette as a hometown company, but it's getting more international in scope in the coming year.

The medical device company announced Tuesday it plans to open a manufacturing and distribution facility in Ireland during the fourth quarter of 2011, and currently has begun talks with the Ireland Development Authority to find potential sites for the plant.

The goal of the new facility is to support future growth for Pioneer in European markets, since it would be within the European Union. It also would allow Pioneer to manufacture different devices for sale outside the U.S., and improve its delivery of current products throughout Europe.

Right now, Pioneer has its headquarters in Marquette, with other facilities in North Carolina, Massachusetts, and one in the Netherlands.

Brian Motter, Pioneer's vice president of operations, says the new Ireland plant doesn't mean the company's not still growing here at home.

"While our present manufacturing facility in Marquette will continue to grow, the ability to provide products from a European facility is an essential part of our worldwide growth initiative," Motter says. "Having established a European presence with the opening of our offices in the Netherlands in 2006, we will continue to grow in Europe and the rest of the world."

Just after that expansion, in 2007, Pioneer also expanded its manufacturing facility in Marquette to support growth in its spinal and orthopedic products. The company currently employs more than 270 people worldwide.
