The former Holy Family orphanage in Marquette has a new owner,
Community Action Alger-Marquette.
The project is backed by Home Renewal Systems, LLC, which plans to convert the old stone building into a 56-unit low-income apartment housing site.
According to Community Action Alger-Marquette, abatement is already underway on the property, which has been in disrepair for many years since its closure. Next up will be removal of hazardous waste like asbestos and lead paint. After that process is complete, an official groundbreaking will be held later this summer including tours.
The agencysays many partners worked to support the purchase and upcoming housing project, including the city of Marquette, Marquette County, the brownfield authority, Pathways, SAIL, Great Lakes Recovery, the Women's Center and the Veterans Administration.
