At a recent Board of Trustees meeting for
Northern Michigan University, among the actions taken were the approval of a new charter school.
Experiencia Preparatory Academy will open its doors in September of 2013, in urban southwestern Detroit. The new school will join eleven other Northern Michigan University charter schools, including several in the Upper Peninsula and some downstate.
Experiencia will be located in a former Detroit Public Schools building, and was developed by a nonprofit organization, according to NMU. Education services provider CS Partners will support the school in financial matters, human resources and curriculum advisement, overseen by a board appointed by the NMU Board of Trustees.
The charter school will focus on applied learning within the Detroit community, using business and organizational partnerships.
The board members, appointed at the same meeting, are Richard Aginian, Norman Bent, Heather Gardner, Norma Hernandez and Julianne Polgar.
