New films, styles shine at milestone 41 North Film Fest

What's happening: Returning to Michigan Technological University’s Rozsa Center is the 41 North Film Fest, marking a landmark 10th year in Houghton. The film fest will feature 20 films over four days, Nov. 7 through Nov. 10. Viewings are free.

A combined effort between the Houghton and Michigan Tech communities is credited for the festival’s longevity, making it one of the longest-running film festivals in the Upper Peninsula. Many filmmakers who have graduated from Michigan Tech have brought back their own films to be showcased at 41 North, increasing the opportunities for thoughtful discussion after watching the films as a collective audience.

Artistic technology: Leading the way is a documentary called "Eno," which uses generative artificial intelligence to create a new experience for viewers with each screening. AI is a complex and often controversial approach to artistic endeavors, with the technology going head-to-head with human workers. However, many artists, like "Eno"’ Director Gary Hustwit, have been working with artists embracing the technology to create more immersive experiences, pushing the limits of the technology in positive ways.

Because of the interdisciplinary aspects of a film using a new and developing technology, MTU’s College of Computing and ICC helped sponsor the film’s inclusion in the festival and many professors will be bringing their classes to see the practical impact of their field. The same department also sponsors one of the university’s art shows as well, promoting the overlap of emerging technology and art.

What they're saying: "When you sit in an audience with others and you experience a new understanding of something or you laugh or worry about something together, it can be transformative in a way that's not possible at home, even with the best home theater system," said Erin Smith, director of Michigan Tech's Humanities Digital Media Zone and a teaching professor in digital media and cinema.

What's next: A full schedule with descriptions of each film is available on the 41 North Film Festival website. Tickets, information and more are also available for this weekend’s cultural experience.
