Marquette General Hospital agrees to buy new property

A new site has been announced for the new location of Marquette General Hospital in Marquette.

Duke LifePoint Healthcare announced it had agreed to buy a 37-acre site for $4 million near downtown Marquette from the city, to locate its new hospital campus on.

The site is known as the roundhouse property, since it previously was an industrial and railroad site leading to the docks in Marquette. Duke says they'll put $280 million into building the new hospital there, including a 80,000-square foot medical office building and a 279-bed primary and urgent care hospital.

The next step is negotiating final contract terms with the city, which will take place over the coming months. The city also will be pursuing brownfield status for the project to include more incentives to construction, and has agreed to tie in surrounding streets to the new hospital, including a new entrance to the hospital from nearby U.S. 41.

"We are excited to partner with the city to revitalize this area and move forward on the construction of the new hospital and medical campus," says Jeff Seraphine, eastern group president for Duke LifePoint.
