Gogebic Community College announced its Houghton branch has moved into a new location in three renovated storefronts at the Copper Country Mall.
The Ironwood-based community college needed more space than it had at its previous location at the Huron Centre in Houghton. Some classes also had been held at night at the Hancock and Chassell high schools.
It now has six classrooms including a science lab, computer lab and nursing classroom in the mall location.
The college has a 10-year lease agreement with the mall owners, UPM Management LLC. The move also will allow classes to be held at more times throughout the day. The Copper Country branch of the college offers about 35 courses each semester, including general studies, business, criminal justice, early childhood education, EMT training, and LPN and associate's in nursing programs.
It employs four full-time staff and about 20 adjunct instructors. There are 275 students registered in GCC's Copper Country location this term, according to the college.
