NMU, Blackrocks collaborate for newest U.P. brew

What's happening: Two of Marquette’s most prominent brands — Northern Michigan University and Blackrocks Brewery — have collaborated on a new product. Wildcat Gold, a 4.8% ABV gold lager brewed at Blackrocks, will debut on August 23 at the brewery’s downtown Marquette taproom. Many of the owners, brewers and regulars at Blackrocks have strong ties to the university as students, alumni or employees of the university.  The collaboration is a unique way of celebrating Northern’s 125th Anniversary as an institution of higher learning in the Upper Peninsula.

Developing culinary collaborations: NMU and Blackrocks join a growing trend of special edition beers coming from craft brewers, which is the second collaboration between a college and a craft brewer this season after Long Road Distillers and Grand Valley State University produced an alcoholic lemonade in June. Sometimes, the collaboration is between brewers and local ingredient producers, while other times, a limited-edition beer can be used as a fundraiser for an animal shelter or food pantry. The U.P. has 30 microbreweries, or roughly two per county. Playing a major part in culinary tourism needs, collaboration projects and working with local brands is a great way to strengthen bonds within a community.

What they're saying: "We are honored to partner with NMU in the creation of the Wildcat Gold Lager, especially as it commemorates its 125-year anniversary,” said Andy Langlois, a 1995 alumnus and co-owner of Blackrocks Brewery. “The positive impact NMU has on the surrounding area cannot be overstated. NMU was the catalyst for most of our staff to come to Marquette. Many of us fell in love with the area and chose to live our lives here. We hope this beer will invoke memories of attending NMU, being in Marquette, and living like a Wildcat.”

What's next: After the debut on Friday, the beer will be available at NMU’s homecoming weekend tailgate on September 21 and at NMU hockey games this year. A portion of the proceeds will support student recreation and health initiatives at the NMU Outdoor Recreation Center.
