Ishpeming-based
CrossFit 906 has itself a new home, and athletes will be able to enjoy the new facilities as soon as December.
The business, owned and managed by Ishpeming residents Shay and Jill Korpi, focuses on the popular workout style that is constantly varied, high-intensity functional movements that are scaled to each individual's fitness level. Workouts contain three main areas, says Jill Korpi: metabolic conditioning like cardio, running, rowing, jumping rope; gymnastics like push-ups, sit-ups, squads, pull-ups and other body-weight movements; and weight lifting like Olympic lifts, sled pushing, kettle bells, medicine balls and more.
CrossFit workouts are short and intense, averaging around 20 minutes or less.
"In CrossFit, our specialty is to not specialize," says Korpi. "We focus on being good at everything vs. one specific area. We offer 24/7 access, and group and individualized training, CrossFit Kids and, soon, yoga."
The company originally opened in Nov. 2010 in a 600-square-foot location before moving in April 2011 to their current location at 144 Greenwood St. Growth has forced the Korpis to expand again, so they decided to build their own location to fit their needs.
The new CrossFit 906 home will be at 610 Lakeshore Drive and will be a 7,000-square-foot facility, known as a "box" in the CrossFit community. The increased room will help fit the 200 clients and 10 staff members.
"With the new building we will be able to offer more services and accommodate for projected future growth," Korpi says. "(We have) a designated area for our CrossFit Kids 906 program and also extra space for our newest service, Yoga 906. Our ceilings are higher, which will enable us to do our 15 foot rope climbs indoors, and there will be 75 feet of turf to push our sleds within the building. We also have a ton of new CrossFit gear from Rogue Fitness on the way to our new place."
