When Michelle Schneider started teaching workshops in Iron Mountain last fall on how to make wreaths, she hadn't pictured creating a whole new business out of it.
But within a few weeks, demand had risen so high she was teaching classes three times a week, and the crafters were asking for more. They wanted classes like glass and canvas painting, garden art, cake decorating, crocheting and others.
Schneider says she didn't know how to teach those things, but since her day job is an executive recruiter with her own search firm in Iron Mountain, she knew how to find people who could. That's how the
Creation Station was born in Kingsford.
The Creation Station held its official ribbon cutting at 501 S. Carpenter Avenue in Kingsford this spring, and already, expansion plans to Escanaba are underway.
"We are now doing classes at the Quality Inn & Suites in Escanaba because we have so much demand there and were getting groups coming nightly from Esky," Schneider says. And the Creation Station's canvas painting classes in Escanaba now are drawing folks from even farther afield, like Manistique and Marquette.
So, Schneider is making plans to open a second new location in Escanaba later this year.
"It's exciting and growing at the speed of light!" she says. So far, the word has mostly spread online, with more than 3,500 people following The Creation Station's
Facebook page, where you can find info on the classes available.
