A large new company is moving into the Keweenaw, as DA Glass, a Polish industrial glass company, has created a United States affiliate that will be located in Houghton County.
The Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance announced that DA Glass America, formed by
DA Glass and Iowa Illinois Warehouse Services, will open in the Houghton County Airpark.
DA Glass America will treat plate glass for use in solar-friendly applications such as in large greenhouses, office buildings and other places. It will be located in the former C-Tech building.
The new company will be led by Steve Williams, and is in the process of applying for a $2 million loan from the state of Michigan as matching funds that could form part of the $10 million expected to be invested in the project.
In the short term, the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance provided DA Glass America with a $100,000 working capital loan to start up its immediate operations in the Keweenaw.
Conservatively, DA Glass has committed to creating 102 new jobs in the area, but says it actually expects to hire 200 or more employees in Houghton County directly. KEDA says the $7 million local payroll that would be created would, in turn, help develop another 90 jobs in the community.
