Blue Water Area Transit partners with the Council on Aging

You may know that Blue Water Area Transit provides regularly scheduled fixed route bus service six days a week to the City of Port Huron and Fort Gratiot Twp. as well as dial-a-ride service in the City of Marysville, Fort Gratiot Twp., Burtchville Twp., and Port Huron Twp.  You may also know that Blue Water Area Transit offers a commuter service Monday through Friday that connects the greater Port Huron area to the SMART bus service in Metro Detroit at 23 Mile Road & Gratiot.

But did you know that Blue Water Area Transit also supports through various means transportation services for many partner agencies in St. Clair County? These agencies include Community Mental Health, the Council on Aging, the YMCA, the City of St. Clair, Community Enterprises, Innovative Housing Development Corp., Blue Water Developmental Housing, I.M.P.A.C.T., Touchstone, and Life Skills. Blue Water Area Transit has received many awards for this support service, including:

  • The United Way of St. Clair County Certificate of Appreciation
  • The YMCA Benefactor of Youth Award
  • The ARC of St. Clair County Community Service Award
  • The St. Clair County Community Mental Health Community Service Award
  • The Community Enterprises of St. Clair County Employer of the Year Award

Possibly the most unique among these partnerships is that of the St. Clair County Council on Aging.

Blue Water Area Transit procures Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for the transportation services that the Council on Aging’s staff provides to area seniors and the Council on Aging is responsible for maintaining the vehicles.

Mobility can certainly be a prime factor in determining whether or not a senior can live independently. With the help of Blue Water Area Transit, the Council on Aging has assisted with this need by providing door-to-door pick-up and return transportation services for seniors throughout St. Clair County for over 50 years.

The Council on Aging transportation fleet includes 12 CNG buses that can accommodate wheelchairs as well as vans and cars for those who do not need wheelchair assistance.
