‘It’s been crazy busy’: Sweet Tooth Cafe fills a coffee gap in downtown Marine City

At the start of 2021, Roasted Coffee & Café in Marine City closed its doors. In the wake of the closure, it left many wondering where do they go now to find coffee?

The Sweet Tooth Cafe is located in downtown Marine City in Suite 6 of Newport Commons at 312 S. Water St.Owner of the Sweet Tooth of Marine City, Todd May, decided to meet that need by opening the Sweet Tooth Cafe in downtown Marine City on Oct. 21.

“When Roasted closed, that's all we heard from people was where they could go to get coffee,” May says. “We had a Keurig coffee maker up front [at the candy store] for a short period of time where we were serving coffee later at night or early in the morning when people couldn't get coffee on certain days…That’s where we realized that if we open a coffee shop it's going to work because people are calling for it.”

The cafe sources its coffee from Lexington Coffee Co., located further north along the water. All of the beans are ground in-house.

The Sweet Tooth Cafe serves freshly-roasted coffee from Lexington Coffee Co. at the coffee shop.“When you grind it fresh, it's a better cup of coffee," May says. “It has more oils and it’s got that great aroma."

"When you come through that door, all you smell is coffee. Signage isn't really necessary — they just follow their nose back here,” he jokes.

In addition to coffee, the cafe offers a wide array of hot and cold beverages ranging from lattes and tea to lemonade and bubble tea. To accompany any beverage, a display case filled with treats such as tiramisu, cinnamon rolls, and muffins are available to satisfy any sweet tooth.

“It's been a great reception here,” May says. “It's been crazy busy since the day we opened the doors.”

Todd May is the owner of the Sweet Tooth Cafe and its flagship candy shop located nearby. He credits his sister and general manager of his candy store, Michelle, for encouraging him to open the coffee shop.

“She knows that anything I put my mind to is going to work and I just needed a little extra push,” May says.
