Governor Whitmer has declared that Saturday, Sept. 26, is officially Downtown Day and Port Huron is on board.
The city will be celebrating with multiple events throughout the day on Saturday.
The day begins with the Farmers Market at Vantage Point and music and live entertainment occurring throughout downtown from noon to 2 p.m.
At 3 p.m. beginning near the Maritime Center is the Main Street Memories Car Cruise. Fall scenes will be set up for photo opportunities. Alpine Cycles will be demoing electronic bikes at their shop.
And then, of course, there’s the numerous retail storefronts, restaurants, and bars located throughout downtown Port Huron, eager for the foot traffic.
"Downtowns, and the small businesses located within, deserve to be celebrated for they distinguish a community, are the drivers of economic development, and help to offer a sense of place that contribute significantly to the quality of life of residents," says Dana Walker, director of the Michigan Downtown Association.
"The small businesses located within a downtown create jobs, commerce, and investment."
It’s the Michigan Downtown Association that approached the governor’s office to request a statewide Downtown Day. Port Huron is one of many Michigan communities taking part in the celebration of downtown districts.
Downtown Day is intended to put a focus on Michigan downtowns and the small business communities hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
"The last six months have taken a toll, but downtowns are resilient and are adapting to current situations," Walker says.
"Our small businesses and downtowns need locals to support them in whatever way possible."
Downtown Port Huron Discount Card: Downtown Port Huron has devised yet another way to promote its downtown businesses.
The Downtown Port Huron Discount Card can be purchased for $10 from the Downtown Development Authority office, giving users discounts to 32 downtown Port Huron businesses. It’s a list that includes Black River Collective, Fair Weather Grill, Moe’s Corner Deli, and many more.
The discount cards are valid through December 2021. $6 from each sale will go to support the Port Huron DDA.
