Construction of new Coney Island restaurant underway in downtown St. Clair

Construction of downtown St. Clair’s newest restaurant is well underway.

And it’s a name that those familiar with family dining in St. Clair County will probably recognize.

Ted’s Coney Island is expanding. The St. Clair location will be the fourth for the locally-owned restaurant chain, which was first established in Port Huron in 1985.

Paul Poizos, who took over the restaurant from parents Ted and Koula in 1993, helms the expansion. Paul expects the Ted's Coney Island is opening up shop in St. Clair restaurant to be open come late spring or early summer.

"We’re just so excited to come to a new community. It’s been a pleasure working with the city," he says.

"There are lots of things going on down there in St. Clair. It’s a great location."

The new Ted’s Coney Island will be located on Clinton Avenue in downtown St. Clair. Taking the place of several older buildings, Ted’s Coney is a new building that will seat approximately 110 customers. It also includes a drive-thru window.

The walls are up, plumbing and underground work is underway. Paul hopes to start pouring cement soon.

Somewhere between 30 and 40 employees will be hired at the new location.

This is the fourth location for the family business. Ted and Koula first opened in Port Huron in 1985. They then added a second location there. Paul opened a third location in Richmond after taking over the family business.

Fans of Ted’s Coney Island can expect all of their favorites at the new location.

"We strive to be a place where you can get quality food with quick service. Creating family-friendly atmosphere is our niche," Paul says.

"There are a lot of people coming in before and after baseball games, a lot of people coming in and out."
