This weekend marks the grand opening of the latest venture for Reedy Corp.’s Entertainment District.
The Gatsby, a modern speakeasy, becomes the sixth place to have a good time in the block dedicated to dining, drinking and entertainment.
Just in case you didn’t live through the prohibition era of the 1920s and 1930s, a speakeasy sold liquor even though the sale of alcoholic beverages was illegal all across the country. Of the illegal spots for drinking, speakeasies were considered a higher-class establishment and offered food and entertainment. In large cities, some speakeasies required a coat and tie for men and evening dress for women.
With The Gatsby, the Reedy Corp. has worked to capture that atmosphere. And in two "soft openings" over the past two weekends patrons have said that is what they like about the new lounge.
The exposed brick and dark hues of the establishment struck a chord, says Traver McLaughlin, of
Reedy Corp. "They love the atmosphere," McLaughlin says.
Patrons can partake of whiskey flights and a wide range of other beverages or dine from the menu. "It’s a step up from the usual place where you go out to sit and drink," McLaughlin says.
Those who came out for the "soft openings" offered their opinions on ways The Gatsby could be even better. "We got a lot of great ideas," McLaughlin says. But many simply want the Reedy Corp. to know they appreciated having this kind of venue available.
"I grew up here in Kalamazoo, it’s my hometown" McLaughlin says, "and this is something Kalamazoo has needed. We’re filling that need and we’re really excited to be able to do that."
Entertainment District, the 300 block of East Michigan Avenue, also features Monaco Bay Piano Bar and Grill, Wild Bull Saloon & Steakpit, Sky|Deck, District Square-Arctic Square and Loft310.
Reedy Corp,. and its Metro Properties also have offices there.
