South Haven plastics plant gets tax break

A company that specializes in plastic products for the horticulture industry is building on its success in South Haven.

East Jordan Plastics Inc. plans to spend $1.85 million to put in new equipment at its South Haven plant. As a result, the company expects to be able to hire 10 employees, bringing its local staff to 21.

The plastics company purchased the former Noble International building at 1600 Stieve Drive in late 2008 with the intent of using it for its recycling business.

Now that its recycling operations in South Haven have exceeded expectations the company has decided to invest in new equipment to manufacture horticultural containers and similar plastic products as it does in its other locations.

The South Haven operation is one of three that East Jordan Plastics, Inc. owns, all of which are located in Michigan.

To encourage the company and its hiring of local employees, South Haven City Council members recently approved a requested tax break with an estimated value of $93,410 over the 12-year life of the agreement.

Statewide, East Jordan Plastics Inc. employs 250 salaried and hourly employees.

East Jordan Plastics is one of the largest horticultural thermoformers in North America. The company got its start in 1947 with wooden flats. Now it has a comprehensive line of plastic thermoformed plant containers.

It is a wholesale manufacturer and distributor of plant containers, nursery pots, flower pots, growing pots, and plastic plant trays. It also makes nursery containers, garden containers, plastic plant pots, seed starter trays, plant plug trays, flats and inserts.

The company also makes  labels for growing pots, including in-house graphic design, printing, and labeling services for plant containers.

The privately-held business has been in the Diller family for more than three generations.
