A job shadow in middle school set the course of Abby Black's career.
As a child, she loved learning about nutrition and read as many books on the topic as she could. Her mother was in the health field and she was the one who suggested her daughter spend a day on the job with a registered dietician.
From then on, Black knew that was her field. She also realized early on that she wanted to run her own business.
Both those goals are realized in
AB Nutrition Solutions, Black's new business recently opened at 511 Renaissance Drive, Suite 131 in St. Joseph, where the building is shared by a law firm, an ad agency, and other professionals.
She offers counseling and education for those dealing with cancer, eating disorders, food allergies, and gestational diabetes. She also helps those nutrition with issues related to with kidney disease, pre-diabetes, sports nutrition, Type 1 and 2 diabetes, weight management, wellness and others. She will offer individual consultations by appointment and group classes. She also is available to do presentations to groups.
Black has more than 10 years experience in the industry, having worked as a registered dietitian, and a health and fitness specialist with the American College of Sports Medicine. She became a Certified Diabetes Educator in 2006 and her work in outpatient nutritional counseling and clinical nutrition has included clients from infants to the elderly.
Her drive to go into business was spurred by the wide variety of help she has been able to offer others. She got marketing research advice from Cornerstone Alliance Small Business Services and the Women’s Business Center before proceeding.
"I've always kept my focus in nutrition," Black says. "I decided there was not going to be a better time to do this."
