Entertaining side of Benton Harbor on display during championship

When the Senior PGA Championship comes to Benton Harbor Monday, May 21, there will be more going on than seeing how far a golf ball will fly.

Local entertainers will be demonstrating just how much talent can be found in the area. Jean Klock Park will be the venue for events Monday through Wednesday and Saturday and Sunday. Programing begins at about 4 p.m. each day and goes for nearly two hours.

The Boys and Girls Club of Benton Harbor Dance Drama Team, local young men and women ages 6 to 18 will begin the week of entertainment events offered throughout the championship. Their portion of the program gets under way at 4:15 p.m. Monday. Next up is All God’s Children Community Choir, a multiracial, multicultural group of children and teens, ages 4 to 18, drawn from Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, and six other communities in Southwest Michigan. They perform at 5 p.m.

On Tuesday, singer, songwriter and master storyteller Mike Talbot plays an eclectic mix of music that spans over 50 years and includes thousands of America’s best loved songs for about two hours.

Benton Harbor High School Jazz Band, an ensemble of talented musicians under the direction of James Jones, will take the stage Wednesday for an evening of jazz classics.

B.E.S.T. Musical Theater  presented by the Citadel Dance and Music center performs Saturday and Sunday. The summer theater program began in 2008 as a performing arts education workshop for students with abilities in singing, dancing, or acting, or all three. Young performers work with professionally trained artists to perfect their talents.

"We are very pleased to be highlighting these talented local entertainers to both guests of the community as well as local community members," says Christine Scharf. "It provides us the opportunity to showcase another outstanding element of the community."
