Obtaining dialysis treatment will soon be easier for those needing it in Benton Harbor.
A new 8,740-square-foot outpatient dialysis treatment is going up at 338 8th St.
The new center is a partnership between
Liberty Dialysis, Lakeland HealthCare, and Lake Michigan Nephrology. Officials from Liberty Dialysis,
Lakeland HealthCare, and Lake Michigan Nephrology broke ground June 26 on the treatment center.
Liberty Dialysis works with local physicians and non-profit organizations to develop clinics in underserved communities. Liberty Dialysis develops, owns and operates dialysis clinics throughout the United States abd enters into partnerships with local nephrologists and hospitals in owning and operating these centers.
"Kidney dialysis is a major issue for many residents in Benton Harbor," says Dr. Katie Kwon, of Lake Michigan Nephrology. "Patients currently have to travel three times a week for treatment, and this facility will help them better manage this chronic disease."
The project is another in a growing number of businesses and service companies that are choosing to make Benton Harbor home, says Dan Hopp, vice chair of Cornerstone Alliance board and chairman of the Lakeland HealthCare board.
Construction of the new center "brings a much-needed service to the over 80 patients from the City of Benton Harbor who receive treatment at other facilities," Hopp says.
