With an eye toward economic diversity now and in the future, the economic development operation of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, Mno-Bmadsen, has acquired
Accu-Mold Inc., a plastics engineering and tooling company that specializes in metal to plastic conversions.
Accu-Mold Inc., 7622 S. Sprinkle Road in Portage, has 18 employees and has been in business for more than 36 years--the last 14 of those under its current owner. Mno-Bmadsen will continue to operate the business of Accu-Mold Inc. under its new subsidiary, Accu-Mold, LLC. It plans to add to the present Computer Numerical Control technology and skilled workforce at its current location.
With experience in the automotive, electronics, medical office, consumer trucking and marine industries, Accu-Mold had the diversified background that made it attractive to Mno-Bmadsen as it sought to enter light industry, a field that also has the potential of allowing it to create spin-off companies.
The previous owner, Dave Martin, will remain with the company as president and the acquisition came through his desire to secure a succession plan for the business.
President and CEO of
Mno-Bmadsen Troy Clay says the tribe through networking and contact with Southwest Michigan First put feelers out about eight months ago to let companies know it was interested in acquiring a business that it could grow. Accu-Mold responded and as the tribe learned how well the company fit the economic criteria it was looking for the deal was made.
"We're blessed that we have a very successful tribe with strong leadership and they are moving in the direction of economic development that looks ahead to seven generations," Clay says. "We're planting the seed that will bear fruit will in the seventh generation."
Clay says the move is significant for the tribe and the community, because others seeking to acquire such a business might be interested in stripping it down and selling it off, while the tribe is instead working to see it expand.
Organized as a diversified holding company, Mno-Bmadsen invests in and acquires new and existing companies within targeted industries, with a focus on long-term sustainability in both purpose and profitability. Mno-Bmadsen conducts all non-gaming, for-profit businesses for the Pokagon Band. In the native Potawatomi language, Mno-Bmadsen means "walking the good path."
The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi owns and operates the Four Winds Casino Resort in New Buffalo, Michigan and the Four Winds Casino in Hartford, Michigan and is building Four Winds Dowagiac.
