A 12-year-old company that designs and manufactures high-quality, energy-efficient LED lighting for fleet vehicles construction trailers, emergency response vehicles, boats, recreational vehicles, and more is expanding in Comstock Township.
TecNiq is building a new facility and investing nearly $6.6 million in a new 100,000-square-foot facility. The expansion is expected to create 120 jobs. The new building will allow the company to expand its product development and manufacturing capabilities.
The project received a $540,000 Michigan Business Development grant through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
Comstock Township has agreed to tax abatement for the project as well.
The company got its start with engineers Jeff Condon and Mark Pruss who began as LED design consultants for automotive companies. They developed software that allowed the design of lenses that projected light in specific ratios to different areas of a pattern, according to the company's website. For example, this allowed the company to create a tail lamp that would save 20 percent of the LED energy and introduce the lowest cost and highest optical efficiency 6-inch oval tail lamp of its time. They went on to form their own company in 2004.
Ron Kitchens, chief executive officer of Southwest Michigan First, says, "Our organization operates based upon the belief that the greatest force for change is a job and we have no doubt that 120 families in the region will greatly appreciate the positive change afforded by this project."
