Battle Creek skatepark closer to reality

Five years of work to get Battle Creek’s skateboarding population a place to hit some ramps and pull stunts is getting closer to completion, reports the Battle Creek Enquirer.

About $70,000 to $80,000 worth of skate park obstacles and ramps were delivered in October to a trucking and warehouse facility for storage until a final building is secured, which could happen as soon as January, said Battle Creek Skatepark Project’s Andrew Wichterman.

The nonprofit organization paid about $20,000 for the equipment, Wichterman said, because the skate park it belonged to in Georgia has gone out of business. Donors paid $35,000 for the equipment, tear-down and transportation from Georgia to Battle Creek.

Now the organization is in negotiations for a building on Tower Road in Emmett Township that will eventually become the Battleground Skate House and Youth Center — if all goes according to plan. “If we wanted to build a park with a professional company, we would have to pay $100,000 to $150,000 for something similar,” Wichterman said.
