Uncovering Adverse Childhood Experiences and trauma-informed care intervention helps children thrive

The ACE scoring method is illuminating the relationship between stresses that children face that lead to public health problems later in life. Awareness of those connections is growing in Battle Creek and elsewhere in Calhoun County.

As teens experience mental health crisis, music therapy is one way they are finding help

With its nonthreatening familiarity and connection to the human brain, music gives therapists a door into teens’ emotions. Music therapy helps teens identify, verbalize, and study their emotions, empowering them to change the way they act and feel.

Finding support as you find your authentic self: LGBTQ+ resources for youth

Just over 40% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year; young people who are transgender, nonbinary, and/or people of color reported even higher rates than their peers. Help is available.

BlackWellness Network helps Black patients find clinicians

There are three components to BlackWellness Network: Bridging the gap in the level of care provided to African-American; breaking the negative stigma that has traditionally been attached to seeking mental health services, and building stronger Black and Brown communities.

Genetic testing: a new tool in prescribing mental-health meds

It often takes months of experimentation to find an effective psychotropic drug. Up to half of patients with major depressive disorder do not respond to the first antidepressant prescribed. Kalamazoo's Genemarkers is among those offering a promising tool to address that issue: a test that can result in prescribing drugs with greater accuracy.

Mental health is finally getting the attention it deserves

In the past 18 months, the Southwest Michigan Journalism Collaborative – a consortium of 12 regional media and community outlets – has published 70 stories on mental-health issues affecting local residents and organizations as part of its Mental Wellness Project.
