West Shore Medical Center in Manistee marks 40th anniversary

Forty years is a long time for any business, but the West Shore Medical Center in Manistee has reached that milestone this month.

Of course, its history as a hospital stretches back farther, with roots in the Mercy Hospital in the late 1880s, which was built by lumber barons. In the 1950s, it became Mercy Community Hospital, along with a major expansion, and then moved to its current E. Parkdale Avenue location 40 years ago in October of 1970, and became West Shore Hospital.

Its offerings have broadened in modern times as well, including the Northwest Michigan Health Center, West Shore Health Connection, Bear Lake Outpatient Services, Onekama Area Health Center, Wellston Outpatient Services, and the West Shore Outreach Laboratory.

The medical center employs 350 associates, 51 physicians, and is run with the help of more than 120 volunteers.

"We invite people to check us out. When they do, they will find a good hospital with state-of-the-art technology, a well-qualified staff, and dedicated physicians who all choose to work and practice in an atmosphere that promotes patient safety and quality of care each and every day," says Burton Parks, president and CEO of West Shore Medical Center.
