There is no doubt that knowledge of money and banking is essential in today's world, so it's refreshing to know that one local credit union is taking steps to educate today's youth about it.
TBA Credit Union recently partnered with Central Grade School to open the school's first Student Run Credit Union, which began business Jan. 19 at Lars Hockstead Auditorium.
Fifth grade students were invited to apply for one of several positions in the credit union, interview for the job, and then train for the assigned position. Students could choose from several volunteer opportunities including branch manager, teller, bookkeeper, computer operator and marketing representative.
With the addition of Central Grade School, TBA Credit Union now has five operating credit unions in local elementary schools.
"The potential of this program for schools is remarkable," says Robin Ahart, TBA Credit Union Youth Program director. "We are excited that Central is coming on board. They represent the largest student run credit union we support to date."
In addition to Central Grade School, TBA Credit Union's Student Run Credit Unions currently operate in Long Lake Elementary, Blair Elementary, TCAPS Montessori and Cherry Knoll.
The value of the credit union is more than just learning about jobs or banking. It's about building life skills.
"This program represents real-world experience for our students," says Central Grade School principal Robert Peters. "The skills they will learn will directly connect to many areas within our curriculum."
