Kalkaska farm wins sustainability award

Iott Seed Farms in Kalkaska recently received an award for environmental stewardship.

The 2014 4R Advocate Award from the Fertilizer Institute was given to Dennis and Greg Iott, the third recipients of the young award. It's given to farmers who use the four "R's" of using the right nutrient source, at the right rate, at the right time, and in the right place, according to the institute. The 4R guidelines are meant to help growers protect the environment, boost profitability and benefit all of society through good stewardship practices.

The idea behind the award is to encourage farmers to think strategically when using soil amendments and fertilizers, in order to reduce waste and protect the environment, as well as lower their costs.

"Michigan's agriculture industry is leading the way in implementing sustainability measures, including the 4R system," says Jim Byrum, president of the Michigan Agri-Business Association. "Our farmers are committed to acting as good stewards of Michigan's air, land and water. Iott Seed Farms is a great example of the work that Michigan farmers are doing to grow their businesses and become more sustainable. We congratulate them on receiving the 2014 4R Advocate Award."

Iott Seed Farms was nominated for the award by its retail dealer, Dale Dosenberry at Wilbur-Ellis in Edmore. The Iotts will receive a trip to the Commodity Classic, a exposition for soybean, corn, wheat and sorghum farmers held this year in San Antonio, Texas.
