American Spoon earns spot as Good Foods 2012 finalist

If there's one thing that folks in Northwest Michigan know, it's darn good food--and that goes for the businesses that are busy making culinary delights, too.

Take a look at American Spoon, located in Petoskey. They have two products that have past blind tastings to be named finalists in the 2012 Good Food Awards.

The company's Heirloom Tomato Preserves and Wild Thimbleberry Jam will be up for the chance to win the coveted award. Those winners will be announced Jan. 13 at a ceremony in San Francisco's Ferry Building.

"For nearly 30 years, we’ve worked to build direct and personal relationships with independent fruit growers and foragers all over Michigan’s Northern Fruitlands," the company posts on their blog. "The Brandywine tomatoes for our coveted Heirloom Tomato Preserves are grown right here by a handful of Northern Michigan family farmers, and every summer we work with local residents of the Keweenaw Peninsula to pick precious wild thimbleberries for our Wild Thimbleberry Jam. Once they’re delivered to our kitchen, we prepare them by hand and carefully preserve them in our copper kettles using twice as much fruit as sugar and a little pure lemon juice."

Both products are typically available on the American Spoon website, though their Heirloom Tomato Preserves are sold out until next year, the company notes.
