The
Interlochen Center for the Arts opens doors in the art and music worlds for many, and they're about to open some across the globe in China and Singapore this fall.
Interlochen's Arts Academy announced they will begin partnerships with two major arts programs in Asia beginning in the fall of 2011. The High School of the Shanghai Conservatory in Shanghai, China, and the School for the Arts in Singapore will be the new partners.
"It is our plan to build strong connections with these two world-class educational and artistic institutions and provide a variety of exchange opportunities for students and teachers in the coming years," says Edward Farraday, VP for educational programs at Interlochen. "Both of these exchange programs are important additions to the outstanding educational and artistic offerings at Interlochen and will enrich the schools involved."
To begin with, 10 students and two teachers from a range of arts disciplines will go to Singapore for a two-week residency in September. Then in October, a similar group from Shanghai will come to Interlochen to attend classes, work and perform. In 2012, the Academy will send music students to Shanghai in turn.
The Shanghai Conservatory is China's oldest music conservatory, and has a school similar to Interlochen's high school. The School for the Arts is a newer school that provides young Singapore artists the chance to explore their talents. The Interlochen exchange program has been several years in the making, according to Farraday, who spearheaded the effort along with music program director Kedrik Merwin.
