Martha Ryan's restaurant in a converted house in downtown Suttons Bay could be in Provence, with its bright colors, fresh local foods and divine desserts. Luckily, it's in northwest Michigan, and that hasn't gone unnoticed by locavores or superstar chefs. It's on Mario Batali's fave list when he dines near his second home in Northport.
And for those who love to learn before they dine,
Martha's Leelanau Table offers a series of cooking classes and tours to whet your 'buds.
Here's a list of upcoming opportunities:
August 11 -- Leelanau Wine Tour and Taste: Travel by trolley to Chateau Fontaine, Circa and 45 North for food and wine tastings, and then return back to Martha's for dessert and a special treat.
August 18 -- Pastries, Pies, Crusts and Galettes: Susan McConnell, pastry chef extrordinaire, teaches some of her secrets for perfect pastry and crusts.
Sunday Supper -- Family-style supper on the last Sunday evening of the month. Next date is August 29. The menu changes weekly, depending on what's available locally and what inspires Ryan. Seating is limited to the first 20 people who sign up.
Ryan also hosts international food tours: A Taste of Northern Italy and the Italian Riviera November 7-19 includes two extra nights in Venice.
